Congratulations, Judy!

For Judy

Yay!! Congratulations, Judy!

I've been struggling to log in and comment here for a couple of weeks, but when I read your call story I just had to make an extra effort!

Whereabouts in SA are you? I'm in Johannesburg. We have a real bona fide South African writing for M&B!! And for Riva!!

Okay, I'll try to stop gushing now ... the screaming must be hurting your ears.

Are you aware that we have an association of South African romance writers called ROSA? If you're interested in meeting other local writers (we have online and in person groups), please feel free to email me on romy@romancewriters.co.za.

Thanks Judy

Thanks for sharing Judy. Great story and congrats again. Looking forward to reading your debut in September. Off to check my characters motivations are watertight.

Judy, great call story.

Judy, great call story.  Not only does it put timescales in perspective but you give some great advice about character motivation (prob. the hardest thing to crack).

Delighted for you!

Lindsey

My call!

Hi everyone and thank you so much for the messages- I have to tell you that it all is still slightly surreal and...weird. Still pinching myself (and checking the contact to make sure I didn't imagine the whole thing! LOL!)

I entered a SA short story competition in 2010 that was run in one of our local magazines in conjunction with M&B. I didn't win but came within in the top three. The stories were sent off to M&B and Flo Nicoll asked me to develop the characters into a novel. I worked on it with her for about six months and then she sent it off to the powers that be.I really thought I had no chance, it was taking so long! Then Flo said that the Riva team had liked it but could I do some revisions (and they wanted the revisions in a week!!!! Gasp, dismay!). Long story short, Flo called and gave me the news, said they liked the revisions and said they'd buy the second book as well. My husband, who was home at the time, was listening to my conversation and later told me that he was ROTF laughing because all he heard me say was 'thank you, thank you, thank you!' like a real geek! LOL!

So that's the story and I have a new career (sort of- can't give up the day job yet!). One thing I've learnt in the last year or so is that the character motivations have to be water tight and consistent throughout the book. The setting can be great, the dialogue sparkling but if the characters aren't working their butts off for their HEA then the book won't succeed.

So, here's wishing you all luck and really hoping that I get to be as incredibly gracious about your success as you have been about mine! And soon!

A virtual hug to you all!

xxxx

PS: I've just set up a facebook page under my pseudonym Joss Wood. Visit me there!

Congratulations

Judy - that is wonderful news and very encouraging to those of us who are trying and hoping! Would be great to hear your Call story...

Sally - good luck on the revisions

Judy & Sally

Congrats, Judy! What awesome news :-)

And yay, Sally, on sending off your revisions, you awesome Minx!! Sending another wheelbarrow full of fairy dust after it--may your wait be short and positive!

The wait from hell goes on but as someone very wise told me yesterday, each day that goes by is a day nearer to the day I will get a response.

I restrained myself and haven't sent my ms a birthday card but I will be toasting it at lunch time today with a big fat cream cake!!

Thank you everyone, and congrats to Judy!

Congratulations, Judy!

And thank you to everyone who woo'd at my news of a full request, I've since had a revision request, and have, today, sent them. (gulp!)

Congratulations Judy!

Congratulations Judy!!! That's fantastic news. I look forward to reading your debut.

All the very best and a glass of cyber champage from me.

I really
understand the frustrations around waiting for feedback on MS’s- it’s soul
destroying. But I can only encourage you to hang in there. After 7 months of torturous silence I was given a two book deal two weeks ago so not hearing anything does not always
mean that nothing is happening. Keep the faith and keep writing. Please don't give up!

Catherine, I agree. I think

Catherine, I agree. I think if Mills and Boon are consistently taking over six months to reply to queries and even longer to reply to requested fulls, they are going to find authors taking their wares elsewhere. M&B are by no means the only publishers in town any more, even for category fiction. And, truly, it does not take long for an editor to make a decision on a query. Six month waits suggest to me that they haven't got enough people working on the slush piles.  I wonder why they invest so much time and effort on New Voices but not on replying to ordinary queries and submissions.

Kristi

Unfortunately I really think it depends on the individual editor and their schedule. Some editors seem to be able to respond in less than 3 months. For others, it is much longer.

I've actually just tweeted M&B and asked if they can clarify what authors should do when they have waited longer than 6 months on a sub. Previously it has been suggested that a follow up email every 4 weeks is the way forward. However, recent communication from eeditors seems to suggest they would rather we just sit back and wait :-(

With all the different options available nowadays I really see a problem with astronomical waits.

I'm afraid I don't have a

Nina -

Will keep fingers crossed for you. A requested full is an achievement. From what I've read on the boards, the wait can seem interminable so hope you've started on something else.

I've uploaded an entry to SYTYCW but am not holding my breath for good news. Pressing on with a new project instead.

Good luck and send some my way too please!

Good luck and congratulations to everyone subbing to SYTYCW.

And I could do with some good luck coming my way too. I sent a requested full off three weeks ago!

Nina xx

May be slush for me

I'm still working on it. I may not reach that deadline. But I will keep working towards it. There is always the slushpile.

Congratulations, Sally!

Congratulations, Sally!  Wonderful news!

I'm working away on my Christmas anthology and trying not to think of all that I have to do for the holidays...eek!  My editor has the first story in the anthology, so hopefully I was on the right track.  We'll see!

Yes to SYTYCW and...

Yes, the spammers are back--they never really left, but there just isn't sufficient oversight here to keep them away.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!

I get to shout because Sally is my CP {shouting about CPs success is in the rules}.

I'm not at all surprised that the full was requested, it's an awesome story with very different and appealing characters and conflict. I wish you speedy and wonderful news!

Request for the full!

Woohoo! I'm doing the happy dance at the moment - Challenging Andie has received a request for the full, and I sent it yesterday.... Now nervously hoping that the ed loves it as much as I do. Fingers crossed! Laughing

Thank you :-}

Definitely not easy. In fact, there are many days right now I wish I hated the waiting enough to give up!! But I don't. Not yet anyway ;-}

Thanks, Christy, will hopefully soon be over. I guess I've waited more time now than I will have to wait ... if that makes sense.

Thanks, Amy, yes every 4 weeks I'll send a query note. Hopefully they will get sick of hearing from me and feel sorry enough for me to read!!

Thanks, Judy, I totally agree with you. This week particularly it's been so hard. I have moaned to anyone who will listen {and to a few who couldn't get away so had to listen!!}. The very best of luck with your ms :-}

@Catherine

I REALLY do know how you feel- I have an MS sitting with a commissioning editor since mid-June and as of yesterday it is STILL under consideration for publication! Urgh.

On the days when I'm feeling strong, I tell myself that my job is to write and keep writing- on the days when I'm neurotic (this whole past week!), I want to give it all up and take up Kntting! Laughing

Don't worry about what you're doing wrong, just write. If you're enjoying writing it, we'd enjoy reading it.

Just don't give up! Sending you a virtual hug and an icy glass of wine!

Sorry to be late!

Adding to the hugs, Catherine. Like Michelle said, just do your best to keep moving forward and send an email every 4 weeks with a polite inquiry.

Fingers crossed for you!

Catherine - commiserations

Sorry! I meant to reply to this soon after you sent it, but my mush-brain let me down.

I feel for you having to wait so long. It's never easy waiting. Congratulations for getting to the full stage though, that's a huge achievement.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that they get to you soon and that it's good news.

xx Christy xx

Catherine--((HUGS)) It's not

Catherine--((HUGS)) It's not easy, is it?  But if another 4 weeks has passed, simply e-mail another follow up and continue on.  All you can do at this point is focus on the next book.  But we'll commiserate with you on the wait.

Can I moan?

Or can someone kick me up the bum with a firm hand? Lol.

I'm on 36 weeks wait on my med full. I've followed up twice, once in July {it was subbed mid Feb} and again 4 weeks ago. I was told then it would be marked urgent ... but still nothing.

I'm a Leo, patience is not really in my vocabulary and I'm finding the wait really hard right now. Of course, I'm moving on and writing more but I worry I'll be making the same errors and it all feels a little like wading through mud right now.

Any advice or a good hard kick in the pants appreciated!!

Keep writing and polishing

Keep writing and polishing - words to live by, Mary! You know the saying: good luck occurs when opportunity meets preparedness. So . . . good luck, everybody :)

LOVED Merri's chapters, Michelle!

Am 40K words into my High School reunion book. So far, right on schedule to meet deadline *fingers crossed*

Don't give up hope yet. Last year, there were some folks who did not make the top group but NV followed up with a request for more, so don't give up hope just yet.

Keep writing and polishing.

Aimee--you just gave me the

Aimee--you just gave me the greatest compliment.  I was so worried about getting the Scottish "turn of phrase" correct, and so many other authors put in the burr.  When I was there, I honestly didn't hear it that much in the Highlands.  Not only that, my characters would have been speaking Gaelic, so it didn't feel right.  If you're from Scotland and you feel good about it, then it doesn't get any better than that.  Thank you!!

Eleanor--sorry about the long wait. Hope you get some answers soon!  And the others are right--you won't get an answer on any other subs until they've made a decision on the first one. They would just hold the others. Good luck!

New Voices was such a fun time for me. I really enjoyed working with Merri (although I made her work HARD, poor woman).  But I do like her second chapter and hope you will, too!Laughing

As for my own work, I'm waiting to hear back on a revised manuscript while I write the next one.

Don't you just love it when...

....you lift your head, a couple of hours have passed and you've lost yourself in your characters? The morning whooshed by! Times like this remind me why I write because there's NOTHING that is quite so rewarding as escaping to another world, creating hayhem and then returning to earth and seeing that white screen filled with black writing!

Of course, I'll probably turf most of it when I edit but that's another day's problem!  LOL! Have a good day and happy writing!

Rewrite and polish time

I will rewrite/organize chapter one and polish chapter two and three before submitting. But I do plan to send it in eventually.

thanks..

Thanks for your messages and hello to Judy! After reading your replies i decided to call this morning, but got the editorial answer phone and didn't want to leave a message..

Think i'll wait now until the excitement of New Voices dies down as i expect that's taking up a lot of the editors' time - i know they've received it as i already chased once in the summer! Will try NTAI for a bit longer!

New to this forum

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and have been enjoying your comments on submissions. Glad to know that I'm not the only one biting my nails waiting for answers!

Hi Eleanor

I'm with Ros, 7 months does seem a very long time. I'd be inclined to follow up pronto.  Either way, you're in a brill position to sub something else with one stab at the send button, and thereafter keep stabbing!

Let us know the outcome and good luck!

Eleanor, I'm pretty sure the editors don't like you to send more submissions in while you're still waiting to hear back on one.  If you submitted in March, you should definitely enquire to see what the status is.
