Doncaster Workshop
Meg - and anyone else interested in the workshop in Doncaster on August 26th - I just heard that the library is capping the numbers at 25 because of space. So if you haven't already done so, it would be a good idea to give them a ring and book your place. The phone number is as on the New Voices web site or the details are on my Events page

Hope to see you there

New Voices Workshop
I've just booked my train ticket on-line and Doncaster Library is a 10 minute walk from the station, which is ideal. I'm really looking forward to the workshop. I do miss the children, Janet, but definitely not the planning, the stress and all the paper work!
Workshops
Sorry Meg - I missed my typo before
Yes, that should be August 26th! Hope you can make it
Janet, thank you for the compliment - I'm glad you enjoyed the workshop I did

Hi Meg,
You were a teacher too! Do you miss it?
I won't be able to get to any of the workshops (I tend to do on-line workshops as I don't live near any of the places where workshops are held) But I'd go to Kate's if I could. I've been to one of hers before and they are excellent (The one and only time I travelled to attend a workshop/book festival. But it wasn't too far away.)
Must try to find a copy of the BMA Complete Family Health Encyclopedia. Thank you for mentioning it--I hadn't heard of it . It's reasonably priced on Amazon. I wonder if it goes out of date pretty quickly.
Hi Meg,
Ooops--I double posted
New Voices Workshop
Hi Kate,
Thank you for getting back to me with this information. I've just checked your website - should that date be Thursday August 26th? I would really love to come, but am going to have to check train times, etc. I'll definitely say hello if I manage to make it.

Workshops . . .
Hi Meg
Michelle sent me over here to answer your question abut New Voices workshops. I'm a bit annoyed that the info for my workshop in Doncaster still says TBC on the web site when I told them almost 2 weeks ago when it's planned for. Sorry you've not had the information you need!
The event is on Thursday April 26th
Doncaster Central Library
Time: 10 am - 12 noon
I always list all my workshops/weekend courses on my web site - http://www.kate-walker.com so if you want any further information then I'll post on the Events page or in my blog for everyone to see.
I hope you'll be able to make it to the workshop in Doncaster - if you do, please make sure you say hello

Medicals
Hi Janet,
Lovely to hear from you. Just had a look at your profile, and see we've got something in common - I'm a retired primary teacher too. Like you, I'm going to have to research the medical side of things and, to begin, am going to try to get the BMA Complete Family Health Encyclopedia from the library - recommended by Kate Hardy in Kate Walker's book. No, I haven't read any Marion Lennox yet, so I'll have a look for her when I pop into the library later. Are you going to be able to get to any of the New Voices workshops?
Meg
Hi Meg, I'm busy reading
Hi Meg,
I'm busy reading Medical s too.
I thought about trying a first chapter for the special fast track going on throughout this month, but decided to wait until I have a well developed idea. I'm not from a medical background so will need to do a fair bit of research. I'm reading lots of medical romances from differnt authors but Marion Lennox is my favourite. Have you read any of hers?
Workshops
I'd love to attend a workshop, Michelle, but don't know whether it will be possible. I live in North Notts and the nearest workshop will be one given by Kate Walker at Doncaster Library - only 30 miles away, but, as I don't drive... At the moment this workshop is TBC on the New Voices page, so I'm trying to find out from the library exactly when it is. However, I'm in the middle of analysing lots of medical romances, as well as reading Kate's book, so I'm beginning to get quite a good idea of the structure of the books.
Best wishes, Meg
Submitting
Meg --
They are always open to new submissions. They are actively looking for new authors across all the lines, but particularly in medical at the moment.
It is best to wait until you have something that you feel confident about.
I am not sure where you are but there are a number of workshops taking place across the country in August and September. see the New Voices website www.romanceisnot.com I'm doing 2 -- one in Knaresborough on 1 Sept and one in Haltwhistle on 18 Sept. The workshops are being led by either authors or editors and are your chance to question the experts as it were.

Re: Medical Resources
Thank you very much, Michelle, for your help. As I've only just begun to look seriously at writing romance, I think I would prefer to take my time and submit when I'm truly happy with a story, rather than try to rush it for the August deadline. Hopefully, it won't be too long before I send in a submission.
Best wishes, Meg
Medical resources
Meg --
Are you trying for the August fast track medical submission?
The medical authors use a number of different resources. Wikipedia can be a place to start. YOu also might want to contact your local hospital and see if you can interview a doctor or nurse who works in the area that you want to highlight. I have always found that doctors and nurses are generally helpful people who are willing to talk if you ply them with coffee and cake. There are also a number of books and medical websites. Always cross reference.
Good luck.

Resources for Medical Romance?
I'm working my way through Kate Walker's '12 Point Plan to Writing Romance' - great book - and have been reading a variety of romances to see which line I prefer. At the moment, I am really enjoying the medical romances and feel this may well be the line I would enjoy writing. However, apart from a lifelong interest in all things medical, I have no real-life experience, e.g. I'm not a nurse or doctor. I'd be grateful if you could advise me about any books that would be helpful and would enable me to write medical romances in a realistic way.

Adding another book to the shelf
As I just read it and thought it highly useful:
Manuscript Makeover Revision Techniques No Ficiton Writer Can Afford to Ignore by Elizabeth Lyon -- chock full of ideas of how to revise your manuscript. But as Lyons warns there is aworld of difference between reading about it and actually applying the info to your manuscript.

Two more books to add to the shelf
1. Fire into Fiction by DOnald Maass. This is his latest and while I did not get as big a buzz from it, he does make some excellent points. A bonus for those who have not read Writing the Break Out Novel, the exercises are included within the scope of the book.
2. 38 Common Mistakes in Fiction Writing by Jack Bickham. This little book was written in 1992 and I discovered it thanks to Trish Wylie and her blogs on it. It is useful in many ways and should help to inspire. The number one most common mistake? Not to write.

As above, Kate Walker's 12 point guide is a must-read and to the general list I'd have to add Stephen King On Writing and Jane Wenham-Jones Wannabe A Writer?

Writing books
I love writing craft books. I live by Robert McKee's adage about talent without craft is like airline fuel burning without an engine. The desire to write shows you have talent. It is how you control it that is important.
So top writing books:

LeslieWainger Writing Romance for Dummies
For more general:

Blake Snyder Save the Cat! and Save the Cat Goes to the Movies
Dwight Swain Techniques of the Selling Writer and Creating Characters

Donald Maass Writing the Breakout Novel and Writing the Breakout Novel Workbook.
