Book Reviews

I have taken the time to post 2 Book reviews for excellent books in my Modern Series delivery and they turn up under someone else's profile with most of the information missing - Grrr.  Get this sorted Mills and Boon.  I have also tried again to nominate a member but it hasn't come through, I seem to have been there since Eve was a girl and I am sure other members are getting a bit fed up up of my Avatar looming out of the screen.

What is happening?

Xmas Books

Most are on ebooks except 5 of them and I really wanted the titles.

I have emailed on contact us over a week ago and still no answer.

Does anyone else have all the Christmas Books for this year on Ebooks?

Thank you Michelle

Thank you for answering my query.

Unfortunately I am still having problems although I was told my account could be changed but I can't get anything to change.

I love your books and your suggestions.

Thank you for taking the time to give me an answer.

a known problem

Asha --

It is a known problem! The software tech people seem to be baffled on how to fix it. It is like these posts are being held in a queue. Yours goes to the bottom and another one is forced out. I have had an exchange of emails with them about this!!! It is upsetting and disorienting!

The good news is that they are working on it!

In the meantime, do drop by the Pub as everyone there  would be delighted to talk about books etc.

Community Issues

Hi

Michelle and one or two others have been in touch with me directly to notify me about the recent issues within the community and I just wanted to let you know we're looking into them!

Thanks for your patience - updates follow.

For this or any other technical issue surrounding the site please contact us using the Technical Problems dropdown in the Contact Us page.

Thanks

The site is starting to

The site is starting to develop multiple personalities & it's turning into the Seven Faces of Eve!  When I read some posts I wonder if the site is being hacked?  It will be interesting to see the response from Nick as to what the problems have been.  I hope he can also sort out the issue about not being able to change part of you profile - a few of us are struggling with that.

Reviews

Yeah, and I just posted a review and apparently my name is Shane Davis.

Can someone let us know the status of this problem?  I won't be attempting to add any books until it's resolved.

Quite agree Nancy -

the one thing that I find irritating about a very friendly and active site is the lack of response to our technical queries.  I'm now cutting and pasting this type of  post into the 'Contact Us' page and hoping it gets a response.  I have tried to change some of the parts of my profie and trying to change the signature is impossible - keeps telling me that my email address is taken -I know, it's mine!  I think a couple of other members have also had the same problem?

Hopefully things will get sorted Cry

I am having the same problem

I am having the same problem with posting a review. I have been three different people in trying to post reviews. I have also had other problems on this site and asked for help and received none. Since the eharlequin site has hosties that get right on problems, it is a bit disappointing that this site seems so unresponsive. Cry

Hi

Certainly something amiss in the state of M&B Community - I dont' think the Book Challenge counter is clicking either?  Still on 898 even though it seems as if a few of us have tried to post?  I'm keen to get it fixed as I always put my favourites from the particular month that I review on the Readers Panel Questionnaire.

Book Review - Caro

Hi Caro

I've had the same problem I did four reviews on the 5th but not a single one has showed up - I was wondering if they had modorated the page and therefore it would show up later on. Although there is still no sign! Also once I confirm the entry it went to someone else and some other book Gina someone I can't recall their full name at the moment.

Hopefully someone will know what's going on!

Sarah

I'll take that to go with a side order of chocolate!

What on earth..?

I've just posted a Book review (Sepulchre by Kate Mosse) - apparently now I am Julie Mitchell ( and if I click on her name I am through to her profile)and no title has appeared on my Book Challenge post!

I am now reluctant to post more Book reviews until this problem is sorted, thanks.

E-book Download Error

Hi There,

I have had exactly the same problem - however with the help of my trusty calculator I can see that the money is in the process of being taken from my account!

I have to say I am really disappointed - I have been e-mailing for the past 3 days trying to get a reply! And I still can't download my e-books. Considering M&B charge the same amount as their paperbacks you would think that they would at least put a little of the profit they are making from the sales towards good on-line customer service!

Guess I will have to wait for someone to get in touch with me in their own time. :-(

Problem with Sage Pay?

Has anyone else encountered this problem when attempting to purchase today:

HTTP Status Code:500.HTTP Status Message:The request was unsuccessful due to an unexpected condition encountered by the server.Error Code : 5006. Error Description :Unable to redirect to Vendor's web site. The Vendor failed to provide a RedirectionURL. Copyright Sage Pay 2009

Although the payment hasn't gone through the books have been added to my Bookshelf (but don't download).  I've just purchased and downloaded a book through another site using the same payment method so it's not a problem with my card.

Have reported to eBooks@hmb.co.uk and waiting for a reply.

1st Feb 2010 eBook Problem

from our eBook team - S.

Hi - we understand that some customers are experiencing problems with eBooks they've purchased over the last couple of days with an error similar to:

Error getting license
Server communication problem: E_ADEPT_DATABASE

We're aware of this and seeknig to fix the problem urgently. When it is resolved customers will receive an email notifying them.

Apologies for the inconvneince in the meantime.

Thanks

Customer Queries

Hi All

Sorry to hear some of you did not receive a response to queries - we recently discovered that one of the menu options on our Contact Us page was not reaching our Customer Relations dept.

There should soon be another menu option on Contact Us specifically for eBook queries. However, as a rule please use:

eBooks@hmb.co.uk - for all eBook queries

Customer.Relations@hmb.co.uk - for all other queries

Thanks

Nick

I too was having problems, I

I too was having problems, I emailed the address given in a post further down the page eBooks@hmb.co.uk and got a response within hours, problem now resolved.  They apparently refreshed the link to my ebook.  Not sure why no-one's responding to the enquiries sent via the "Contact Us" page though, that's not good.

Since my last post I have mailed customer services twice - still no response! This site and the customer service is appalling!!

eBook download issues from beginning of Dec 09

I get a repeated XML library problem from any book on my eBookshelf that I purchased from 2/12 onwards.  Very very annoying, I bought some books on 28th which is when I noticed and reported this issue (twice!) still with no response.    I've tried 3 different pc's 2 different operating systems, chrome, ie and firefox and nothing works!

Is anybody else experiencing this?

ebook purchase problem?

Any idea why I keep getting this message when I click on the button to buy an ebook?  Is it me, or my PC or M&B?

photo problems

Hi, have finally managed to upload picture to my profile after about 10 attempts, however even though the picture shows in my profile it doesn't show when I post any comments on the forums.  I haven't ticked the box to say I don't want my picture shown, so I don't understand what is wrong.  Can anyone help?  Have used the same picture on e harlequin and it appears there with each post. thanks

Thanks for the reply,

Thanks for the reply, Michelle! Didn't think to look at the eHarlequin site... d'oh... *puts on newbie hat* I see now that they have both a Fantasy and a Paranormal section on there. Will have a look in more detail about writing/submission guidelines and the likes. Thanks for the tip! :) Have just finished reading Kate Walker's 12-step book as a guide as well. :)

Yesterday I read through a (film)script which I wrote a couple of years ago, which in turn was another version of a story I wrote some other years before of about 12k words. And I finally figured out what the major problem with it was! I already knew it lacked bits of plot, but yesterday I realised that the major thing missing is that the stakes aren't high enough. If the heroine gets kicked out of the education she's in... well... so what? I need to raise the stakes so that if she was to be kicked out, it would be more of a disaster rather than "aww, that's a shame, I got kicked out, now I'll have to get a job".

Anyhoo. That's a modern-day story! Trying to figure out which line that could work as. I'm lurking the historical section on here but haven't yet had anything to post about as such. Trying to think of all the questions I have, but thanks for solving the biggest issue I had so far. Maybe she can be a lord's daughter and be quite spoiled, even if it's 800 years ago! :)

Oh, on a side note... I read in Kate's book something about a certain line (don't remember which one) can house a bit controversial storylines... Question is... how controversial is TOO controversial? ;) (Because my second favourite roleplaying plot is about a steamy couple who, well, are related. *cough* It's an absolute hoot to write about but I'm guessing it might not suit this kind of publication! ;))

Nocturne

Sofia --

Nocturne is the urban paranormal so that may be the place for you.For romantic fantasy type, you are looking at Luna. Both are edited out of NY. so you will find details as well the authors more on the eharlequin site.

HQN and Harlequin Teen are also both publishing paranormal at the moment. Rachel Vincent and Gina Showalter spring to mind as top names to read.

Over here, HQN is often published as Mira but they are now starting a new super nocturne imprint and this might be the HQN etc.

And can a 12 century lady be spoilt? Well I certainly have written Viking women who were. I think in all ages, there have been spoilt princess types. I had a great time writing Lottie Charlton in An Impulsive Debutante and she started off as a spoilt woman who grew.

Because both genres do have overlap in vivid world building, you do find some authors write both. Denise Lynn springs to mind for M&B/Harlequin. Kersley Cole who writes for another publisher and recently did a triple number 1 in the best selling lists in the US started off writing historicals.

ANd please drop by the historical thread as we are always delighted to discuss all things historical!

Hope this helps.

Other genres?

This feels like it's in the wrong section, but the forums are not very intuitively laid out so I can't find a place where it would fit - and if I could, I can't post a new topic! :( Also, I'm new to M&B - only started reading them last year!

I'm just wondering about subgenres. I'm a scifi / fantasy / horror (hrm, "horror" sounds so severe, let's call it "stories of the paranormal" instead!) kinda gal both when it comes to reading and writing. Is there a M&B line for me? From what I can tell, possibly "Nocturne"? Can't find submission guidelines for that, though, and it sounds more like stories where someone falls in love with a vampire or that sort of thing... Whereas I'm after something like paranormal investigators (got hooked on The X-Files when I was about 11 - never looked back since!), or dashing starship captains cruising the inky void of space (or trying to survive on a terraformed planet), or sword & sourcery fantasy.

I'm hooked on the Historical line and while I can have characters running around in a medieval type setting, I can't have them use magic or be spoiled princesses... which is my current problem with regards to a story. The heroine was originally supposed to be a spoiled princess, but transferring her to a medieval setting means she's the daughter of a lord, and then there are all sorts of conventions one must follow to be in tune with the historical facts, and that means, how spoiled can a 12th century (or so) woman actually be? Just naming the characters is a bit iffy as they need to fit in as well. Then again, if I did Regency stories (very tempted), there wouldn't be so much of a problem.

A friend and I are writing a story which is actually part of a roleplaying game, and to translate that into a historical setting would be quite strange, as the thing that brought the couple together was a foretelling... okay that's not so difficult perhaps, but considering he's a professor of Divination and she's a student... that's where the whole "umm, yeah, but magic schools aren't for real" comes in. To change it so that it's not divination would be weird, as the heroine is his prodigy pupil, and being able to forsee the future has a tendency to weird other people out. (Which of course means that in each other, they've got someone who Understands and can Relate... and who aren't freaked out by hearing when they're going to die!)

Anyway, I ramble. I should go write on a book instead! :)

EDIT: It doesn't even have to involve magic, actually. I have harboured an idea for a fight-against-oppression type story for a few years now, but it's set in a fictional medieval-time land, not a real one... which would make it fantasy.

In the 'Nick' of time...

Hello Nick, thank you for your feedback and I'm looking forward to the fixes that are coming along. I hope I speak for many of us in the M&B community when I say how delighted and appreciative I am of the site and the hard work that has, and is, going on behind the scenes.  Fair warning - We won't let you rest on your laurelsWink.

P.S. Stunning photo on your profile - love the outfit!

eBooks & Post Cataloguing in Community

Hi

in reference to the above 2 posts, the 1st on Fave forums, posts and blogs is a known issue that we hope to have fixed (very) soon..

...on the eBooks issue, please email eBooks@hmb.co.uk directly and we aim to get back to you in 24 hours. Sorry if that hasn't happened in this instance.

Ebook won't download

Bought an ebook last week (Sun) and when I went to download it wouldn't work for me.

Emailed Customer Care and got an email back on Monday saying technical team were looking into it but haven't heard anything since.

Anyone else have the same problem??

I've had the same and other

I've had the same and other problems--I think TPTB are still trying to work some bugs out of this site.

Feedback

Hi, I have gone to @My Profile' and clicked on the 2 active links to show me my recent blog entries and posts but I'm then getting up a message that the page can't be found, go the home page.  Is this a known problem?  Am I being a total dingbat? Thanks.
