Re: Medical Resources
Thank you again, Nancy for these excellent links. I've had a look at them and they are just what I was looking for - there is so much information on them.
Best wishes and good luck with your own writing,
Meg
Meg, I have even googled
Meg, I have even googled specific procedures, like a tracheostomy, or a "cutdown"-- anything from
emedicine.medscape.com
www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/
www.mayoclinic.com/health/
are also good resources. Going out on the web can be a bit of a challenge, but those are all reputable medical websites. Good luck!
Re: Medical Resources
Thank you very much, Nancy, that's really useful. I've bookmarked those links and I'm going to have a look at hospital websites here in the UK.
I use my memory, my old
I use my memory, my old nursing textbooks and the websites of top hospitals in the US. I'm sure that top hospitals in the UK, OZ and NZ all give out general information. Oh, there is also the CDC website in the US (Center for Disease Control) and NORD (National Organization of Rare Diseases) in the US.
Medical resources?
I'm working on my first medical romance and would like to ask about resources. I put a post on 'The Write Stuff' and Michelle Styles pointed me in the direction of Wikipedia and advised me to interview a doctor/nurse - all good advice. What medical books would be useful to buy? I've already bought the BMA Complete Family Health Encyclopaedia (after reading Kate Hardy's advice in Kate Walker's book), but wonder if there are any other books out there which would give me lots of general advice on how doctors and nurses deal with medical situations. What books do medical romance writers find invaluable?

Hi Nancy, I received a return email with acknowledgement and reference number little more than a hour after I sent it. Looks like I am the 788th submission this year! Hope you hear about yours, Susan

No I did not. I'm thinking it is time to ask if it ever arrived.
hello ladies!
Am very happy to join the medical thread - it's quiet isn't it? I have just done a partial submission on a story I had put through the the Romantic Novelists' Association New Writers Scheme. It was a terrifying experience to finally ask someone else's opinion on my writing! Never fear! I loved the feedback and made the changes they suggested, once I had read them I totally agreed with them and wondered why I hadn't seen some of the things myself! From now on I will be patiently waiting........ Have checked out your website and blog Kate and think its fab, as is lynne's and I live in hope that one day I will be worthy of a website of my own. Sent my submission by email and now just hoping it isn't lost somewhere in cyberspace and that eventually I will receive some sort of acknowledgement. Did you ever get an acknowledgement of receipt Nancy?
Since I still have no
Since I still have no avatar, maybe I am the imaginary friend that you all have.
I think this M&B community is still very small. Think we should pop into the pub and say a very exclusive party is happening at the medical site and there are cute docs here? LOL -- Exclusivity and hot docs -- how about that as a hook
?
Medical Romance Party - too small!
Well, this thread is so exclusive only three of us have shown up! Any suggestions on bringing in new guests?
Kate? Nancy? shall we go to the pub and round up some new friends?
My jaw is still dropped over Kris over Adam (US Idol, winner was a surprise) The voters went for home grown over theatrical. As Ryan Seacrest said, and I loved the line: "Humble versus Guy-liner" They'll both have big careers, but Adam, I think, will be remembered more.
My two cents, which doesn't mean a thing if you haven't seen the US Idol series this year. Oh, well.
Nancy, I had to laugh at your imaginary friend statement. Proves you're a real writer!

Is it just me, or have all
This post is here, but you are right, all your prior posts have disappeared which makes me look like I am having a very odd conversation with my imaginary friend.
Am I being paranoid?
Hi!
Is it just me, or have all of my prior comments here been wiped? Where did I go? I promise I'm here, and TPTB are working diligently to solve my community problems. I want to participate because this monthi I have a book on the website, and I love that book, and I'd love for as many people as possible to read it. ha ha. I cried when I wrote it, and the few people who've already read it said they'd got a bit teary-eyed at parts too, so that makes me really happy.
Here's my sig - created by me!

I still can't upload a photo or add a signature. I still get a red message that perhaps I have forgotten my password, but I am already logged in! (Using the said, forgotten password.) Or I get a message that another user is using my 'username'. Again, that would be...
...me!

Lynne--I think you and I are suffering from the same faceless syndrome. When I try to upload a photo, I'm told that there is someone else registered in my name. It is good to see that you made it into the blogs and forums.

Kate: sounds like a plan.

Medical museums
The Hunterian was great. Lots of "Things In Jars". (Probably not for the squeamish!)
If I pitch a shape-shifting time-traveller, maybe my ed will be so horrified that she lets the real idea go through in relief that it's more "normal"...

So am I--enjoy the museum. Have your narrowed your crazy ideas down to a time travel Medical shape shifter romance yet?
Come on, surely you can sweet talk the editor into something with a little medical history mixed in.
PS on the subject of medicine...
I'm in London tomorrow and am planning to sneak in a visit to one of the medical museums - not sure yet whether it'll be the Hunterian or the Wellcome, but I'm FASCINATED by the history of medicine.
At the moment, I am trying to work out how I can sneak some into a romance. Maybe they'll have to visit a museum, OR... Oh-h-h. Lightbulb. Next step: sweet-talk my lovely editor...

Whoo hoo, Nancy, you made it!
Lovely to see you here. I couldn't do the pic at first, but then it finally decided to accept it.
Could be sizing? I redid mine as 200 px square and it seemed to like that.

Hi Lynne and Kate!
I think there still must be some bugs to work out. I can't import a picture or set a signature, but I was able to fill out a bio.
I look forward to meeting some more medical lovers over here.

Wow, am I the first?
Well, a big welcome from me on behalf of the Medical authors (they will be along later - including the Aussies and the US authors).
We have lots of exciting things lined up this year - those of you who enjoyed our Brides of Penhally Bay series last year will be pleased to know that there's a second season towards the end of the year. Will they, won't they? (I'm not telling!)
Plus we have plenty of standalone titles coming up, with all kinds of settings.
Last month was a bit of a special one for me, with The Children's Doctor's Special Proposal - pun on the tile not intended! My heroine is deaf, like me, so I really enjoyed showing a slightly different side to medicine. I have to admit to borrowing bits of a wedding from real life - last year, my cousin got married in a beautiful little church in Norfolk, and it snowed. How could I resist something so romantic?
I'm so looking forward to chatting to everyone - finding out what you like about medical romance, what you'd like to see more of, who's your favourite TV doc... (And I'll make a bid for Michael French in Casualty. I stopped watching it last year because the storylines just didn't grab me, but caught it again earlier this year - and was delighted to see all the emotional drive back again. All we need now is for Holby to bring back Anton and Zubin...)
cheers
Kate
