The Pub

We thought the cafe might be a little too daytime and people would also like somewhere to discuss things afterhours and over a drink so here's you have it ... The Pub.
No suitably appropriate name for our place of socialising yet but feel free to let us know if you have a brainwave!

Guilty Pleasures
I thought Guilty Pleaseures was good. The parts with Roger the author were okay but the real pleasure was in the 3 couples followed by the Director Julie Moggan. The review (below) from the Independent seems to feel the same as I do about much of it - although I am tempeted to dwell on the absolute s*d that is Sanjay. Dear heavens - what a right piece of work.
I thought the prgramme was tender and moving when portraying the 2 couples: Phil & Shirley (loved it when he quickly chose the Valentine's card "in and out, like the SAS" ) and Hiroko and her husband - a nod to the film 'Shall we Dance' I think?

Try, Try again.
I'm very concious that subcare is dealing fabulously with writing anxieties so I tend to write things in here I really want an answer to that doesn't come under the heading, updates.
Did anyone see that a blog dealing with the loss of virginity has been turned into a book? The writer's name is the same as a M&B writer but I don't know if that's coincidence. Does anyone?
Anyway, my question still stands. What was the worst line you ever got from a male trying to talk you into bed. I really want to know!!!
The Worst Line Ever.
I've been wondering. I don't think this is a subject for The Write Stuff but it might open up 'what if' doors in the head. What is the worst line of bull a male or indeed female has ever handed you in a sexual context?
Come on ladies. Belly up to the bar and reveal all. I've got several that still make me snigger. Who's first?
Ohhhh, Michelle
Who's a pretty boy then? Perhaps we should have one day a week when the barmen all have to wear kilts. It would do wonders for my equilibrium.
Speaking of barmen. I caught the Monarch in the Glen for the first time ever on one of those sky channels. That actor playing the heir is a bit of all right. Don't know his name but very pretty eye candy.
I sound like the dirty old woman I am. Age might wither me but there is nothing wrong with my imagination. Should I put my glasses on now and look harmless?
Kilts and David
Who needs a drink? It would get in the way of staring at the handsome laddie over there in the kilt.
David Tennant in a kilt
Gemma --
Here you go.

Hopefully it will bring a smile to your face. One does not ask what he has on under the kilt!

Oh I do love a man in a kilt.
Morning Michelle. I had thought kilt for David Tennant. It would swirl beautifully with one of his quick turns. Has anyone seen a photo of David in a kilt?
I'm afraid my recent visits to the pub. Just a quick peek, you understand. I've needed a drink a great deal more than a man snack. I've been hiding in the corner crying in my mai tai.
Why you have decided...
Gemma --
When you have decided which outfit David Tennant is wearing, do share? Is he in a kilt now? Or something a bit more buttoned up?
Possible bartenders from Game of Thrones -- Kit Harrington who plays Jon Snow, Ricard Madden who plays Robb Stark (both of whom appeal to my teenaged daughter) and then there is the Danish blond NIkolaj Costner-Waldau who plays Jamie Lannister. I think Sean Bean is already around somewhere...

Something to check on
Thanks Michelle. I'll check out that program. It sounds like my kind of thing. After a day hunting and pecking at the computer I love a good brain turn off. Sounds ideal.
I'm just selecting an outfit for David to wear as our barman. Shame the weather has changed, he looks so good out of his clothes.
Game of Thrones
Gemma --
Yes certainly David tennant coming up. He was brilliant in United a few weeks ago (about the Munich air crash with Man U).
Game of Thrones is based on a series of books by George RR Martin called A Song of Fire and Ice. They are fantasy -- basically the war of the Roses with dragons. Having been inspired by the series which is v faithful to the books, my daughter has been reading the books. The eye candy in the series is pretty good. It has an older Sean Bean...

Thanks Michelle
I'll try and find it on the iplayer. I'm more of a book reader than a television watcher so I've missed both programs you mention but since David Tennant is out of work can we have him in here as barman?
There is something devilishly sexy about that man.
Guilty Pleasure and Game of Thrones
Gemma --
Guilty Pleasure went out on one of the channels controlled by Channel 4.
Is anyone else watching the guilty pleasure that is Game of Thrones? Complicated and entangled but good eye candy.
And what about Dr Who? Any theories about time travel?

I need a drink!!!
I feel I should be grimacing intoning I'M BACK. I've been missing in action for a while. Can someone please tell me what channel Guilty Pleasure went out on? I chased it all over the networks and still managed to miss it. Bummer.
Has anyone got the magic elexir? I'm in desperate need of a pick me up. What are we drinking and who's serving?
On the cutting room floor
To my great relief, the segment I was in didn't make the final cut. They did a bit on the RNA conference from a few years ago and I recognised a number of people including friends from the RNA Northumberland.

Looking forward to 2 hours of Guilty Pleasures
I've got the PVR all set to record the Guilty Pleasures programme tonight and will keep my eye out for Michelle S. Very prosaically I will try and watch some of it tomorrow in the early morning quiet time before work. Hopefully the 'pleasure' will help with wading through my breakfast porridge!

Guilty Pleasures
I shall be watching from behind my hands. I was involved (v slightly) in the filming when they were doing the Roger Sanderson segment. I am currently hoping that I ended up on the cutting room floor. The women who did the filming seemed very pleasant. But it has taken an age to come to the screen as it were.
I hope it is a good documentary, rather than a joky one.

Hello? Anyone there?
Hello! the Pub seems to have gone a bit quiet recently? I've blown the dust off the bottles and got the staff to polish the mahogany on the bar to a briliant shine.
Have you seen the TV listings and the More4 strand on Tuesday next week? http://www.channel4.com/programmes/guilty-pleasures on 12th April

is it just me or is everyone eating way to much this christmas :F
Not only the sweets are my problem.. it's everything.. i don't understand why.. I'm not eating too much normally..
It is a long time
since we had visitors for Christmas. I can remember having twenty people at the dinner table one year, and four generations, my daughter being the youngest. We put a sheet of plywood on the table top so everyone could sit down. Such fun.

I'm making candy
I'm making candy today--since I have a dd allergic to corn she can rarely have any candy made in the US. We use corn for everything in the states and it doesn't work for her. So out comes the chocolate, rum soaked fruit, rice crispies (made with no corn--hard to find, but not impossible). Good thing all my kids are adults.
We are getting bedrooms/extra beds ready for visitors. This is the first Christmas in years that we will have family visiting. Yippee!
Thanks, Ann!

Mulled Wine
This is an old recipe, therefore not very precise:
To every pint of wine allow 1 large cupful of water, sugar and spice to taste.
Boil the spice in the water until the flavour is extracted,
then add the wine and sugar, and bring the whole to the boiling-point.The spices
usually used for mulled wine are cloves, grated nutmeg and cinnamon, or mace added to suit your taste.
Any kind of wine may be mulled, but port and claret are usual.

Mulled cider and a bbt on each arm
Thanks to Flo's post about writing about creative types, I ended up watching wayyyy too many xfactor clips of Matt Cardle. I know I should have commented on her fab post, but I was just...well, here I am, ready for the Pub party with Matt Cardle on one arm and Jamie Bamber on the other. And a pot of hot mulled cider. MMMM! (on all three counts!)

Baking and carols
There isn't the Christmas cookie exchange in the UK that much. It is far more mince pies and CHristmas cakes. But my family have discovered pannetone and panneforte so I tend to buy those in. When the children were little I used to make a ton of gingerbread.
As Kate Rusby and John McCusker are exes, I am not sure about having the two in the same pub...even though both have remarried. Her new husband Damian McKane is a pretty mean fiddler/all around musician. But it would be great to have those sorts playing away.
I did hear the Battlefield Band play one year at the Cambridge Folk Festival. McCusker was still playing for them then. Their song One More Chorus is quite appropriate for a pub...

I have all my Christmas
I have all my Christmas villages houses/ships out all over the house (there are over 80 houses at this point). The tree is up, but only partially decorated. I have fruit soaking for fruitcake, but no baking is done. I'm listening to lots of Christmas music.
I've got bourbon balls and
I've got bourbon balls and fudge to share. And we need egg nog with rum.
So have you ladies decorated your houses for the holidays? I have my garlands up and the tree. I've done a lot of baking so far, but mostly for other people!

I tried posting this several times yesterday...
... but it wouldn't go through
I love Kate Rusby's voice--do you think she would come if we offer her a pint. As
long as I am wishing for cyber music, could we get Battlefield Band to stop in,
too? I'd ask for John McCusker since he is one of my youngest dd's favorite
fiddlers (she's a fiddler, too), but that might be a bit awkward.

Equal opportunity warriors
It is good to see that you are committed to being equal opportunity, Michelle W. bringing both types of warriors.
I agree the santa hat on the ampersand is a nice touch.
So we have Christmas decorations, carols, men and...
What sort of food should we have?
And more importantly what should the bartenders be doing?

Party in the pub!
I agree Nancy, let's throw a party in the pub!
I went to a Kate Rusby concert last night where she sang various South Yorkshire versions of Christmas carols. Apparently in South Yorkshire the carols were far too joyous and got kicked out of the church and into the pub. And a tradition of carol singing with a pint in hand continues to today. Her version of While Shepherds Watch Their Flocks ( Sweet Bells) is currently my youngest favourite Christmas carol ever.
So I think having a party with carols etc would absolutely great.

Party in the Pub?
Party? Pub? Wahhoo, I thought I would pop into the pub and start the decorating. I have several fake Christmas trees up in my attic so I dragged them down and I have all my "country--wooden ornaments I'm not using this year. They will need to go on the largest tree along with the plaid (or is that 'tartan') ribbons and bows. I have set a small tree on the opposite end of the pub--up on the bar--it has some homemade dried cinnamon applesauce ornaments. There is a third tree that has nothing on it yet, waiting for you to put some of your favorite or spare ornaments on it. Does someone have a wreath for the door?
Spam
Hi All
The plugin we've introduced removes around 97% of spam according to the makers and, looking at the quantity since we implemented this it does indeed appear to have done that. Sadly 1 or 2 posts entered manually by people determined to push unwanted Uggs, Rolex watches and other items of dubious authenticity may still get through and we will remove manually.
So, we continue to work on it but you should see a marked difference in the quantity and frequency.
Here's hoping they get bored and do something useful. Is the pub open? I'll have a drink!

Anti-spam
Hello All
As promised we've made (not our first) move in the war on spam with implementation of a new plugin that should hopefully prevent any more spam issues.
Generally speaking it will not be necessary to enter a code, but occasionally if the community thinks a post or commetn is spam you may come into contact with a polite message to enter a code into a box liek the one above.
We will continue to monitor this and please don't hesitate to email us if this or any other issue persists.
Thanks
Nick
Spam
Hi All
Just a quick note to say we are aware of the spam problem currently plaguing the Community and are seeking to resolve it ASAP to restore order with a clean and pristine spam-free place for you all to catch-up and converse.
We have been removing some manually in order to limit the disruption but aim to cut this off at the source as a matter of urgency. Sorry about all the terrible, terrible ads and spam.
Please bear with us - an update will follow this week!

As I understand it is Catherine with a C, I also can understand why some of the media are going with the K.
It was a lovely stylised WK on ITV news. Somehow WC just wouldn't work in the same way...

Kate AKA Catherine does have a great sense of style and what works for her body type and coloring, so I'm interested to see what she chooses.
All the papers are full of royal engagement news
As I think they have been waiting a long time for this, the newspapers are full of news of the engagement and pictures of the couple's relationship.
Apparently Kate Middleton now wishes to be called Catherine. It does go better with a title, doesn't it?
I suspect that the royal wedding will prove as popular in the US as it does over here. There are echoes of 1981 including a hugely popular early 20th century costume drama on tv.
I wonder where they will hold the wedding? I hope St Paul's. And I hope Miss Middleton goes for a wonderful dress.
