Why eBook?

by Nick Bates on April 28th, 2009, 10:37pm
We've noticed a lot of talk on the Community about eBooks and eBook reader recently so thought we'd provide a thread to hear al your thoughts and feelings on the subject.
Who knows, if you're teetering on the edge of the digital revolution in reading perhaps here's where we tip you over?!

Unable to read ebook
Hi,
despite several emails to help resolve my problem, i am yet to do so. I have purchased 5 new ebooks which i am unable to read. i have just purchased a new laptop and have not been able to read the new books at all or the ols titles either! I authorised my laptop. have have the books as .acsm but cannot covert to epub to read them. I am able to read books from other sites but not from M & B
Iphone
I've noticed some chat about using an app called txtr for the iphone which has the adobe id in its reader and enables you to email your M&B books to a server download them onto the phone and read them. Is there any reason why I can't do this?

iPhone
Hi Camilla
Currently Mills & Boon titles are not converted to a format for the iPhone but watch this space...! The best idea would be to sign up to our monthly eNewsletter, the first place we'll inform customers of additions to new formats (after the community of course)

iphone
I am in the US and use an iphone for e reading, and would love Mills and Boon to add a format that can work on the iphone. I would love to save on shipping for books not published in the states yet..or at all.
Please addd a format for iphone.
Format Queries
Hi J Margaret and everyones else who has posted a format related query here,
Thanks for your queries regarding different queries and their associated virtues and vices.
Currently we make the ePub format available from millsandboon.co.uk. However, we also make Mobipocket formats available (from whsmith.com/ebooks) and titles are now available on the Kindle store (amazon.com/kindlestore) as well as to mobile devices including Blackberry at gospoken.com.
Please let me know if you have any questions devleoping out of this...
Thanks
Nick
Hi All I'm a host
Hi All
I'm a host for the Simply Series area on the US eharlequin Community and thought I'd drop by and say hi. Of course, I can't resist discussion about ebook and ebook readers since I've been a advocate since I purchased my Sony Reader in May 2008. I now buy 99% of my books in digital format...and can imagine going back to printed books for my leisure reading. Of course, as a high school teacher, I still have to read most of my class text in paperbook format, but that's work...lol.
Formats
I e-mailed you on May 15th. Like other readers, I have been reading e-books for years, first on my Palm tungsten T3 and now on my Cybook. You haven't replied to any of the posts complaining about the format. I don't want to be forced to buy the Sony reader when the Cvbook will read multiformat and Mobipocket books as well as PDF books. You won't get my custom until you provide a universal format..
Sony ebook
Have been using my Sony ebook for a few months now, it's perfect for me. As with any new bit of technology I ran into problems when I first tried to download to it, my mistake I had not registered it so it was 'not recognised' on the computer. Once I had sorted that out and ordered some M & B ebooks I could not get them to download from the email, I have found that I have ask it to download a second time and this solves the problem, just a case of clicking on the ebook a 2nd time. The Sony ereader fits into my handbag so I can take it everywhere with me! I find that setting up 'Collections' works well as I retrieve the books easily from whichever title they are i.e. Modern, Romance etc. I am no where near filling the 2GB memory on it yet, I estimate approx 200 ebooks, yet I already have 2 extra SD memory cards in the holder in the Sony ereader cover, 600 books in my handbag, I do like technology!!!
I would recommend it to anyone, I am even starting to find that I am weening myself off from the comfort of a paper book in my hand.
ebook downloads
is anybody else having horrendous trouble downloading books to sony e reader?
I got an ereader!!!
I got a sony ereader yesterday for my birthday - total surprise from the boyfriend!! He obviously does listen to what I say! I love it! Have copied some of the classics across from the disc Pride & Prejudice etc because I haven't read them for ages. Wad a bit tricky at first but really easy when you get the hang of it! Am so looking forward to taking on holiday at Christmas!
downloading from eharlequin
Hi, I wondered if anyone of you can help me? I just bought 3 ebooks from eharlequin online. Paid and got to the page where it said download which I did, it showed a box to download digital edition so I did, clicked download on the books again and nothing!
Have I done something wrong? How difficult is it to download the ebooks after you've paid for them? Have I just flushed my €15 down the toilet.LOL.
It can't be that hard surely? I also have a sony ereader which I was hoping to transfer them onto. Fat chance now. I find the reader great for traveling but it's a bummer it can't be used during take-off and landing, don't know why, but I was asked to turn it off on my last flight. No match for a real book, though, when curled up at home, I must admit. Thanks in advance for any help with my downloading.
More More Backlist please Sony ereader
While I was cleaning out my storage found two old books by Jaqueline Baird one of my most favourite M&B authors (read the books), well guess what me the genius decided to do, I searched and boy did I google, yahoo I think I have been to all the websites that sell M&B ebooks and was looking for all the old books. I will use JB as an example she has published I think more than 31 books, but currently there are only about 6 ebooks in the market. Unless someone knows something I don't.
I have to say I was dissapointed, because the only books in the market are books from about three years ago for some authors others like Lynne Graham books from only last year. Can something be done, I no longer use the storage room so I can collect as many books as I want all I need is an external drive and my ebooks thats all
.
I have to say it will very good treat if I have all my favourite authors juts at a click of a button
LM
More backlist titles please!
I love the fact I can get my hands on a new book at the touch of a few buttons; no waiting around for the post or dragging my kids off to the bookshop (again).
I would really like to be able to get hold of more backlist titles from favourite authors as it can be difficult to find these by other means.
More, more, more please!
eBooks
I thought my laptop was the next best thing to sliced bread for its ability to store so many books…and I’ve found my eReader to be just as fantastic, if not better, as it truly is portable. It’s great for reading in the garden as there’s no backlight on the eReader to compete with natural sunlight. A big plus for anyone who loves to read outdoors in the summer.
Downloading is easy. I simply just drag ‘n’ drop directly into the eReader or the memory stick, and I’m ready to go…no waiting for delivery and no fuss, just hours and hours of reading as the battery lasts for days.
As much as I love real books, I can imagine a time when it will be more politically correct to conserve our natural resources and bow to the alternative of buying our reading material in this format.
Transferability between devices
I like ebooks, but the technology has a way to go yet before it replaces the physical book. Besides the satisfaction of the feel of a real book, having a author sign it, seeing the pages turn and knowing the delicious inevitability of the end from how many pages are left (the reason I find books with a first chapter from another release at the back soooooo disappointing!), I can read in the bath!
I do like the immediacy of buying an ebook. Midnight on Sunday and I absolutely must read a particular authors new book right this minute? I can with an ebook!
The main irritation for me is the lack of transferrability between devices. I don't have a dedicated book reader, I read ebooks at home on my laptop, or on my PDA. I hate carrying loads of devices, and I use a PDA running Windows Mobile that I take everywhere with me, so I'm not about to go out and buy a bookreader.
My frustration is that I can read pdf ebooks on my PDA, so I assumed I'd also be able to download the Digital Editions epub format used by M&B and share my ebooks with my PDA. Not so. There's no Mobile edition of the software.
I can buy M&B books in Mobipocket format that will work on my PDA and PC, but I have to go buy separate copies of the books I've already bought in epub format!
I know M&B needs to protect its copyright in the books, but I think the ebook checkout needs to be set up to allow the copy of the book to be downloaded in more than one format.
This is the main issue putting me off ebooks right now. it's my own fault for not being more aware of this transferrability issue, but I'm really p-eed off that to read them on my PDA I will have to go buy new copies of those three M&B ebooks I bought last week.
Because we all deserve a happy ending!

ebooks
i love my ebook reader and would think it would be a good idea to put next months release books at the end or back of the ebooks the same as print books?
how do other ebook reader feel ?
I've been using the ebook
I've been using the ebook format for a few months with the Adobe Reader and definitely prefer it. I wish though that all the book types were available as some of the books in Special Releases are not in ebook format which is a huge disappointment to me.
I've been thinking about getting a Sony Reader but not sure I could manage to transfer the books I have.
I also hope that the Advance Subscription/Club Offer which would allow you to read the books 2 months in advance is made available as soon as possible in e-format as I would definitely sign up for that
E Books
From the first time I saw the notice of the e book concept I bought a book to have on my lap top. Regretabbly to this very day I cannot read it notwithstanding the instructions from M&B. I am dissapointed since e books are anyone's library space saver and ane environment-friendly initiative. Maybe others are encountering the same problems and like me they are not that well versed with downloading special programmes to read the e books. Maybe M&B can come up with some other way in which can read these books.
Sony Reader
I have had my sony reader for a couple of weeks now and haven't experienced problems with either verifying or transferring my ebook purchases to my device. I was rather surprised at how easy it was to do.
Like all formats ebooks have the pros and cons, but for someone with very limited space the reader has been a major life saver.
Even my Mother who has been an avid reader for almost sixty years enjoys reading on my sony. I will be seeing about buying her own one for Christmas. Ever since using mine she has mentioned buying one of her own but knowing her as I do, what she deems we need will come first and the sony reader will be at the back of the line which will be forever increasing in length.
While DRM is a headache, it is what I refer to as an necessary evil, to make certain that books aren't illegally distributed.
Like all new technology there are pros and cons, also the cost isn't cheap but all new technology is expensive, give it time and the cost of devices and by extension ebooks will eventually begin to fall.
As someone who remembered the inception of both vcr and dvd machines it only makes sense that ebooks/devices will take the same route.
Sony Reader
Well today I bought myself a Sony Reader! It is charging at the moment but I had a little play and it looks fab.
I've had no problems copying my M&B books onto the reader. When I open my Adobe digital editions my sony reader is listed on the bookshelf so it is simply a case of drag and drop.
I can't wait for it to be all charged and ready to read
sony reader, ebooks and freebies!
I was given a sony book reader for my burthday and have downloaded numerous books from mills and boon and waterstones. The trickiest part was then moving them from the adobe book reader into the sony book library and then into the reader. I was also able to download all the free ebooks from the american harlequin website with no problems - I had thought american websites were incompatible with the reader but appratently not!! Maybe Mills and Boon should also offer some free ebooks downloads like their sister company??!!
Sony Reader
I have been pondering buying a sony reader for a while. There are laods of offers on them at the moment due to father's day and I am thinking forget my Dad I want one!!
The fact that I know with teh new reader my mills and boon can be added to it I think I really should treat myself!!
H just bought himself an Ipod Touch so I tihnk it is only fair that I can have a new toy
Love my sony
My husband bought me a sony reader for Christmas and I love it. I have had no problem downloading books and being able to change the font size is a big plus for me. I love being able to browse, buy and read a new book in a matter of minutes. I download from Mills and Boon and another site I use is BooksOnBoard its very easy and has a huge collection of books to choose from.

Initially, I had a problem
Initially, I had a problem with downloading the Adobe reader but M&B was very quicke and helpful in advising how to overcome this.
The only problem I find is if the internet connection is slow or the computer crashes midway through the credit card transaction, the page to access your purchased ebook won't appear. This means having to repeat the process and paying again for the ebook.
Saying that, I enjoy reading ebooks as text can be enlarged for easier reading and will continue to purchase future ebooks.
ebooks problems
just a warning to those with an ereader or ebook device.
I've just bought 10 ebooks online and have tried to download them, and none of them will verify the document so it makes them un-readable, un-usable and worthless as you cannot access them without them being verified as they are drm (copyright) protected.
I have sent emails to M & B via the website and via replying to email order and waiting for their response, however I am not happy as as far as I am concerned they have taken money and not supplied goods usable.
I have bought books with them before and had no problems, however this is not good, and I will see their response and speed to my problems as to whether I would buy from them again.
I think its always good to know and share not only the good things but problems as well. Just be careful when you buy books online, and buy one first to check it works ok.

iPhone
I too tend to use my iPhone as my ebook reader. As such I have only been able to purchase Harlequin books on the ereader.com site. I would love to be able to by books from the M&B site, and not have to sit at my computer to read them.
E Reader
Have read romantic fiction for over fifty years. My set book for GCE was Pride and Prejudice, and that led me to read Heyer later on for escapism. I have a Sony reader and the other advantage that I have found is relative weight especially compared to hardback books.
I agree that DRM management is a drag, but necessary to make sure that the authors' are paid for their labours.
E-book formats
I am very disappointed that you are using a format which is not supported by most e-readers. I have used e-books on my Tungsten T3 Palm for some years and I have bought the Cybook Gen3 as the palm battery is not long enough. I would love to be able to have my subscription Historical volumes in e-book format to save space and for portability. Why don't you use Multi Format which could then be used on a number of devices instead of trying to force everyone to buy the Sony e-reader? My Cybook can read PDF books and documents but it doesn't appear that your Adobe Acrobat version is a pdf one.
iPhone compatible format?
I love ebooks and have been reading them for years. I used to read them on my Treo which ran Palm OS, but I now I use an iPhone. Unfortunately this means I can only buy Harlequin books from the US and not Mills & Boon, since your books have DRM, and none of the DRM formats you supply work on the iPhone.
Could you add a format that is iPhone-compatible or consider dropping DRM (thereby letting me use ePub)? EReader is the only ebook DRM format supported currently by iPhone, so could you consider adding that? Stanza is supposed to add Adobe DRM support, but I don't know if that's going to go through now that Amazon owns them.
I can get most of your books in the US editions, but some books are UK-only. The iPhone is one of the most popular phones (and Stanza's been downloaded significantly more times than any dedicated device), so I can't imagine that I'm the only person who'd like to be able to buy from you.
Sony e-reader
I have a Sony e-reader and I have bought books from Waterstones and there have been no problems importing them and reading them. Just as there have been no problems importing the books from the M&B website once I have downloaded them into the Adobe editions. It was a bit tricky the first couple of times until I understood what I needed to do, but once I was able to work it out I have had no problems. I have not managed to lose a book yet. I have even managed to re-import a book because I decided to re-read it again at a later date. Admittedly as with another comment, the local charity shops are now losing out especially as I have been known to buy up to 15 books a month easily and pass them on unless they were the ones I wanted to keep, buy my bookshelves are no longer groaning - only my laptop....
. I must remember to back it up at some point though.
You do not need to convert the books from the M&B website as the format they provide them in are readable by the latest version of the Sony e-reader PRS505.
Thinking of getting an sony ereader
I am thinking of getting a sony ereader but I read that it is a bit difficult to convert ebooks bought from other suppliers other than sony to the sony ereader form.
Is there a way of coverting my M&B ebooks on my laptop to a sony ereader format, because if there is way then I am getting myself an ereader.
I think the great thing about it I don't have to hide my cover too what I relief (don't get me wrong I am a proud M&B reader)
Cheers L
No Sony Reader
eBooks
I think they are fab! I am partially sighted so it can take me a while to read a standard book but with the eReader I can change the font size and I am now reading so many books, it is wonderful!
The one down side is when I log on to do some work I can often get lost in a book!
Ebooks and M&B, perfect partners
I love reading my M&B books on my eReader. As someone who reads up to 8 books a month (or more if I'm honest) I did find that the books pile up and it did feel like a waste to buy all of them when I only ready them once. So I love having them on my computer instead and I've now got an online library if I ever want to go back and read them again.
The eReader can be a bit tricky to set up, but once you're up and running its so simple. I think the M&B site is one of the best for eBooks.
The only problem now is that I can't hand my books on to the local charity shops, which means they'll lose out on some donations.
Even better, I'm not worried about hiding the cover when I'm reading an M&B at my favourite coffee shop in town {:o)

Sony Reader
Hi!
I'm a newcomer to ebooks and am currently downloading my Digital editions to the Sony Reader.
I'm looking forward to being able to keep up with my favourite M&B authors, and catching up with titles I've missed. I also love being able to buy without having to pay extra for delivery. A win, win situation!
Natalie, I agree, I'll still enjoy curling up with a paperback. I see ebooks as complimenting my book collection rather than replacing it.
Nick, thanks for starting this thread here.

eBooks
If you're a bookaholic like me ebooks are a great way to build up a substantial library without taking up any space. I've got about 100 books stored on my laptop and have got used to reading them on screen. Adobe Digital editions is easy to work with. Also, I can order a book and start reading it immediately!
I still love curling up with a "proper" book though. I don't think ebooks will ever fully replace the printed word.
