Marcus, Wendy – The Nurse’s Not So Secret Scandal, M&B APR12 ****
This is one hot book and it is sure to please the readers that enjoy hot, spicy reads and a ripping fast pace. Marcus is an author that takes on challenges. She has created a heroine with a troubled childhood—her heroine’s back-story includes a troubling past. This subject is dark enough it could be a turn-off to some readers, however she mixes in a resilient young woman that has learned to live life to its fullest. Her hero has a different but still troubling back-story, but she has created another survivor in him. The sparks start flying from the first time they meet.
Marcus creates an impossible to set down story with compelling characters, who are sometimes hard to like and yet I found myself in equal parts cheering for them and wanting to smack them upside the head. If you prefer sweet reads you will not find it between the covers of her book. But if you want something truly different from most of the HM&B medicals, this is the book for you. Marcus is one of the few gifted authors who use humor in the writing. Not everyone can pull off the funny, snarky tone she can use to great effect—especially when the subject matter needs something to lighten up what could otherwise be a dark subject. This is a book I could not put down--in fact, I read way too late in order to finish the story before bed. Well done.

I agree about the lightning rod - which would explain the 1 rose review I received on M&B. I once read, 'As an author you want to evoke emotion in your reader. Whether good or bad, you want them to respond."

A new kind of hero
I would like to add that it somewhat surprised me that this hero was not a medical person. One shift as a unit secretary does not make a medical person of any kind.
So, brava on stretching the parameters/pushing the boundaries a bit. Brava to the editors for accepting this edgy story. I suspect it will be a bit of a lightening rod story. There will be those that love it and those that hate it. There were times the heroine was hard to like--there were incidents/scenes that pushed this reader out of her comfort zone. I don't necessarily think that is a bad thing.
