To Boldly Go...

I grew up on science fiction and fantasy.  And while I'm no Trekkie, I love the series.  Although, my favorite series was DS9, not the original.  Still, I loved them all.  And I was so excited to go see the new movie last week...and I loved it.

So, why do I love Star Trek (science fiction)?  I've been talking Star Trek this last week and it occurred to me, that I love the genre because it's all about possiblity.  In Star Trek, it is possible that people will learn to get along.  That they'll learn that our differences are not that vast.

In Star Trek, people value intelligence, but they also value going forward boldly--seeing a goal and chasing after it.  I won't say without fear because never being afraid isn't a sign of bravery, it's a sign of stupidity.  LOL  No, being brave is chasing after a dream or goal despite being afraid.

So, I love Star Trek.  I don't own a costume, and don't speak Klingon, but I love the sense of possiblity that the series brings with it.  I love that it shows people Going Boldly despite their fears, flaws and occasional failure.

I wish Star Trek week...one in which anything is possible!  I hope you all boldly go...

Jane

Jane,

I love McCaffrey and read a lot of Marion Zimmer Bradley, too!  And as for Firefly/Serenity...anything Whedon does is marvelous!  Have you watched Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog??  I can sing along!  LOL

It really doesn't matter what the genre is for me...it's always the characters that grab me in a story!

I got into sci-fi mainly

I got into sci-fi mainly through my second husband, who's a long-term dedicated fan (but just stops short of going to conventions!) though it was something I enjoyed as a child, so not an entire departure for me.

Of the two, I probably prefer science fantasy as a genre, because it stretches even the bounds of sci-fi, but enjoy interesting sci-fi hybrids like Serenity/Firefly. I was a big fan of Anne McCaffrey's dragon books when younger, and grew up adoring Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea stories. And what I think made those books for me was the strength of the hero/heroine figures - it's always about people, in the end, and their relationships, not spaceships or magical creatures. Though those are fun too!

Kay

Kay,

That's actually why I ended up writing romance instead of sci fi.  I can throw in science fiction or fantasy, but I love that romance is about the people...about their relationships!

Holly

Yes!

Absolutely agree, and the best sci-fi is all about relationships. You can have pink and green people, but the interesting bit isn't the pink and green-ness; it's the way they interact with each other!
